Vans, bodies, freight vans are similar notions, but we do not think of terms and all of them are produced well by us.

Vans for manufactured goods are used for transportation of consumer goods, which require only environmental protection and do not require observing certain temperature conditions at transportation.

Insulated vans, also called “isotherms”, are designed for transportation of perishable goods and deeply frozen goods at a certain temperature.

Refrigerators are used for the same purposes and difference in names is due to structural variations: refrigerator is an insulated van with a refrigerator set.

Ice cream freezers are used for local delivery of deeply frozen foodstuff (ice cream, frozen meat and fish) and are insulated vans, which internal space is divided with barriers into several sections. This is why ice cream freezers are also called multiple-section insulated vans. Access to sections is ensured by means of side doors numbering from 3 to 5 on each side face of the body.

For commercial vans we offer wide range of auxiliary equipment:

Polyurethane foam VS extruded polystyrene foam

Quite often customers call and ask: “I want to buy Hyundai van with insulated van made of sandwiches or Isuzu or KAMAZ freight van or any other truck. You make vans of glued boards with the use of extruded polystyrene foam, and I heard that polyurethane foam filling sandwiches are better and cheaper.” First, about what our managers, who really know advantages of both types of vans, think is “it's a pity that mind of a man is so easy to manage, it is so easy to knock into our heads something, which is profitable, which brings in a big revenue to somebody. One cheats on us so often…” Search your mind, you must be sure that: Only Danone yoghurts contain bifidus bacteria, boiled sausage contains meat, BORK household appliances are made in Germany, carbon dioxide bursts made by humans lead to temperature rise. However, in fact all this is illusion: Almost all cultured milk foods contain bifidus bacteria, if boiled sausage contains meat, this meat is of such a quality, that cannot be sold without preliminary processing, BORK has nothing to do with Germany, and carbon dioxide dispersed into the atmosphere by humans does not influence temperature changes at all, vice versa, temperature rise leads to CO2 increase in the Earth atmosphere.

Let us disclose one more conspiracy. Let’s begin from definitions.

Glued sandwiches. Layers of this panel are coupled by means of two-component polyurethane adhesive in vacuum press. At that sandwich can be both three-layered (external coating + heat insulator + internal coating) and five-layered (2 more layers of plywood are added, if it is required to increase panel rigidity or if loader is to work in the van).

Filling sandwiches. External and internal coating of future sandwich is got into press, at that a certain distance is chosen between the coatings. Then through a tube into the space between coatings polyurethane foam is delivered, which like a polyurethane adhesive consists of two components, but these components emit gas, when mixed, as a result mixture is foamed. The most difficult thing about this is to achieve uniformity of mixture distribution, i.e. mixture density should be uniform along all the panel volume. Mixture hardens under press and panel of a given thickness comes as a result.

We will not study in depth fabrication methods of polyurethane foam (PUF) and extruded polystyrene foam (EPSF), but we will examine advantages and disadvantages of vans made of glued and filling sandwiches:

1. They say, that insulated vans made of PUF are cheaper. Indeed, vans made of filling sandwiches are cheaper, but not better. You should have paid attention to the fact, that industry rather does not improve technologies, but prefers to reduce costs. Thus, it is easier and cheaper to construct buildings of modular constructions, it is cheaper to grow genetically modified vegetables and fruits. Likewise, in Europe vans are not produced in the true sense of the word “produce”, they are rather assembled there. In the whole European Union there are just several producers of filling sandwiches. At these factories panels are cut with respect to concrete chassis and delivered to van assemblers by trucks. This is why when a customer says “in Europe all vans are made of PUF”, we answer: “Firstly, not all vans, only budgetary vans. Secondly, they are made of PUF by capitalists, only because panel filling technology is cheaper than gluing technology, as less labour force is involved.” We draw your attention to the fact, that, beside all this, PUF vans made in Russia differ in quality from European ones, but we will tell you about this later.

2. You probably know many van manufacturers, which products are famous for their quality not only in Russia, but also far beyond its borders. Their price is the evidence of their quality, thus, insulated van made of sandwiches for GAZelle has the same price as GAZelle itself. Several years ago Mosdesignmash purchased van fabrication technology with the use of glued sandwiches in Germany. What do you think about these 2 facts: Russian quality leader enterprise produces vans of EPSF and it bought this technology in Germany - home of Schmitz, Koegel and KRONE?

3. Before we drew your attention to the fact that Russian vans made of PUF differ from the European one. There is a reason for this. We use rigid EPSF in production of glued sandwiches for our insulated vans. It is produced at certified enterprises in accordance with GOST requirements. Manufacturers of isotherms of filling panels buy components, at mixing of which, as it was said above, polyurethane foam is formed. Uncle Sam should select proportion of components correctly, because this influences not only quality of heat insulation, but also adhesion to external and internal coating of the van. That is why often we welcome customers, which have earlier experimented with Russian vans made of PUF and which complain that after some time bulges appear on body walls. It is the evidence of the fact that uncle Sam has made a mistake and foam had low adhesion to metals due to its incorrect composition or poor raw materials.

4. One more distinctive feature, which distinguishes Russian vans made of PUF from European ones, is constant work in relation to cost reduction. Thus, mixture made by uncle Sam is injected by uncle Peter into the space between the pressed panel coatings. If managers set a task before uncle Peter to reduce van cost price, he injects less mixture, than he should, as a result instead of required polyurethane foam density of 35 kg/m3, the density will be 25-30 kg/m3, and panel heat-insulating properties and rigidity will be worse.

5. One more reason for extruded polystyrene foam. After cutting EPSF and running your hand over the cut the hand will remain clean, and after cutting PUF dust will remain on hand – the same as is formed by self-supporting foam. By the way, self-supporting foam is polyurethane foam contained in closed container under high pressure. If you ever used this construction tool, you should know, what happens to it after exposure to environment.

6. PUF panel perimeter is always more fragile than that of EPSF panel, as both types of panels are cut at the edges after removal from under press. It does not influence EPSF strength, and PUF peculiarities lead to destruction of its structure, reduction of its solidity and process of further destruction begins. You can also check this with the use of self-supporting foam: it is difficult to pierce it with a finger, but after its cutting foam can be picked throughout.

7. Polyurethane foam and extruded polystyrene foam are used in other industries. Orthopaedic pillows and seats for sofas and armchairs are produced from PUF with special additives added, and extruded polystyrene foam is used in building floors to make them warmer and then they are underpoured. What does this mean?

8. At production of PUF panels it is impossible to provide cast-ins in them for installation of refrigerating equipment unlike EPSF panels. This is why most frequently PUF van manufacturers mount refrigerator sets as follows: in the point, where roof is connected to the van frontal panel, from the inside and outside steel angles are installed (often they are made of shaped tube with 20x25 mm section), fixed to each other with bolts throughout panels. Refrigerator is fixed to these angles. This poor construction is enough to distribute refrigerator load between the roof and van frontal wall. By the way, in Europe, in order not to spoil appearance, van frontal walls are made of EPSF and cast-ins for refrigerator sets are provided in them. For our country it is too expensive.

9. One should note, that we produce vans of reinforced sandwiches. You will read here about reinforcing technology and advantages. What concerns PUF vans, one cannot even mention reinforcing – the technology will not allow this. This is why it is prohibited to transport goods in bulk, work inside the van with loader, cargo can be transported only on pallets, as any force action can lead to deformation of van walls.

10. Strength of glued panels is confirmed by tests. Mosdesignmash company conducted bending deflection tests on PUF and EPSF sandwiches for insulated vans and refrigerated vans. As a result filling panel was broken under load of 3 tons and glued panel – under 6 tons.

11. However, the most important thing is heat-insulating properties of materials, for example, PUF heat-transfer coefficient is 0.035 W/m•ºС, and that of EPSF – much less – 0.028 W/m•ºС.

You may experiment with PUF vans as much as you want, we can only give you useful advice. You should remember that insulated van is not the van for manufactured goods and your experiments may cost spoiled food.
